On November 30, this year, the World Trade Organization (WTO) Department of the World Economy and Diplomacy University (UWED) held a roundtable on “Uzbekistan’s WTO accession: Special and preferential treatment in agriculture”. The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as faculty and students of UWED.
The roundtable discussed the WTO’s special and preferential regimes that can be applied to Uzbekistan's agriculture. It also comprehensively examined the specific benefits and implications of Uzbekistan’s WTO accession for agriculture, taking into account trade rules, market access, and policy changes.
In addition, the roundtable highlighted the stages of Uzbekistan’s WTO accession and their impact on achieving national goals in the areas of employment and the modernization of key industries. Special attention was paid to the fact that the mechanisms of special and preferential regimes provided for in WTO agreements for developing countries can be beneficial to Uzbekistan and provide it with the necessary flexibility for integration into the global trading system.
In conclusion, the roundtable developed recommendations for Uzbekistan’s trade policy that ensure its compliance with national development goals and international trade standards.
