The President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) visited UWED
A delegation led by the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dr. Akihiko Tanaka, visited the University of World Economy and Diplomacy on January 20 of this year.
During the meeting, UWED leadership, headed by Sodyq Safoev, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and Rector of UWED, and the Japanese delegation, led by JICA President A. Tanaka, discussed joint projects in the fields of educational programs, student and faculty exchange, as well as research on sustainable development and technology aimed at addressing pressing global challenges. The participants also explored ideas for organizing joint seminars and conferences to strengthen ties between the university and Japanese research institutions.
As part of his visit, JICA President A. Tanaka was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of UWED.
While at UWED, Dr. Akihiko Tanaka delivered a lecture on the topic: “Challenges of Global Sustainable Development and Prospects for International Cooperation.”
In his speech, the JICA President emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among nations in tackling global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and sustainable development. He also addressed questions from students.
The lecture by the renowned Japanese scholar and JICA President sparked great interest among UWED students and faculty, broadening their understanding of Japan’s role in the international community.
UWED has been collaborating with the JICA Foundation for over 20 years. Numerous joint projects have been implemented during this period. One such initiative involves the foundation annually providing volunteers to teach the Japanese language at the university.
Since 2020, UWED and JICA have been jointly hosting a major event known as the “JICA CHAIR.” This program features lectures on economics delivered by distinguished scholars from Japan and other countries.
In 2023, the former head of JICA in Uzbekistan, Miyazaki Suguru, conducted five lectures at the university on Japan’s economy. These lectures also garnered significant interest from students, further expanding their knowledge about Japan.
