Prospects for the development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan discussed at UWED
On October 15 this year, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy hosted an international scientific and practical conference on the topic: "Challenges and Prospects for the Development of Nuclear Energy in Uzbekistan".
The event was organized by the Center for Energy Diplomacy and Geopolitics of the Institute for Advanced International Studies at UWED and the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan.
The conference was attended by the heads of the Ministry of Energy and other departments of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Rosatom State Corporation, representatives of research centers, international experts from Hungary, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Serbia, the USA, South Africa and other countries, as well as the faculty of UWED.
Opening the event, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Rector of UWED Sodyk Safoev noted the dynamically growing economy of Uzbekistan, which, in turn, leads to an increase in demand for energy resources. In this context, he emphasized the relevance of using nuclear energy.
"As an initial step in increasing safe nuclear generation, it would be possible to start with the deployment of modular small reactors, for example, in remote regions. This will modernize the energy infrastructure and diversify the energy complex with lower investment costs, meeting the demand for energy resources," said S. Safoev.
During the conference, the participants considered current and future projects in the field of nuclear energy, ways to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities and their role in the country's energy balance. Particular attention was paid to nuclear medicine in Uzbekistan and its importance in the fight against cancer, as well as non-energy applications of nuclear technologies.
The participants shared their experience of cooperation between Hungary and Russia in the development of nuclear energy, the active use of nuclear power plants to meet the energy needs of Turkey and South Africa, and discussed the development of nuclear safety issues.
The results of the scientific forum demonstrated Uzbekistan's readiness to effectively use international experience and implement advanced standards, which is a prerequisite for the successful development of the nuclear industry.
The participants of the event were unanimous in the fact that the international conference at UWED has become an important platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience, which will certainly contribute to the further effective development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan, taking into account high standards of safety, environmental responsibility and economic feasibility.
