UWED in Venice: Intersectoral Dialogue and International Cooperation for Achieving the SDGs

The International School of Sustainable Development “Interdisciplinary Global Sustainable Development School” (IGSD School 2025) was held in Venice, Italy, as part of the ECR Sustainability Training Academy. The event was organized by the School for Cross-Faculty Studies and the Institute for Global Sustainable Development of the University of Warwick (UK).
Sardorbek Murtozayev, lecturer at the Department of International Economics, and Komila Shoislamova, PhD student at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), represented Uzbekistan on this international educational platform.
From the perspective of interdisciplinary and intersectoral dialogue, their participation contributed to the establishment of new connections not only in the educational field but also among government, civil society, and business representatives, expanding opportunities for joint projects and partnerships.
The training brought together students, young researchers, PhD candidates, and early-career scholars from various countries, including India, Uzbekistan, the UK, Brazil, Azerbaijan, and Spain. Participants discussed key topics in sustainable development, climate justice, global inequality, and international cooperation. Special emphasis was placed on the intersectoral approach: many sessions included both academic experts and representatives from civil movements and the business sector, enabling a broader perspective on the issues and encouraging collective solution-finding.
The program included interactive lectures, hands-on workshops, and discussion sessions aimed at developing creative thinking, interdisciplinary approaches, and global dialogue skills. Topics such as the ethical dimensions of sustainability, climate policy, and societal transformation received particular attention. Participants collaborated on practical case studies, highlighting opportunities for international partnership and the exchange of best practices to foster cross-sectoral and global cooperation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
During the event, Sardorbek Murtozayev and Komila Shoislamova gave a presentation titled “The Impact of Foreign Trade and Investment on the SDG Achievement Index,” which sparked keen interest and led to a productive discussion on the role of international economic collaboration in achieving global goals. Their presentation also laid the foundation for further dialogue with representatives of foreign universities and institutions interested in joint research.
UWED’s participation in this initiative marked an important step in strengthening international academic collaboration and advancing scientific exchange in the field of sustainable development. Furthermore, the presence of experts and enthusiasts from different sectors – education, NGOs, government structures, and business – highlighted the necessity of intersectoral dialogue and idea-sharing. This format not only enhances UWED’s contribution to the global implementation of the SDGs but also creates new opportunities for transforming sustainability approaches in national and regional contexts.
