    On June 5, this year, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, visited the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

    First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Rector of UWED Sodyq Safoev, welcoming the head of the WTO, noted the importance of her visit against the backdrop of Uzbekistan’s desire to speed up the process of joining this authoritative international structure.

    “The goals of the reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan are fully consistent with the objectives of the WTO, which are aimed at promoting the sustainable development of countries and improving the well-being of their population through ensuring and expanding free and transparent trade relations,” he emphasized.

    S. Safoev announced the decision of the Scientific Council of the UWED to award the title of honorary doctor of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy to the Director General of the WTO Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for his great scientific and practical contribution to the development of international economic relations.

    In her speech, Okonjo-Iweala, touching upon the activities of the WTO department operating at UWED, noted the demand for joint research projects between the university and other institutions of the international organization’s network to address common trade issues and promote sustainable economic growth.

    The head of the WTO highly praised the role of UWED in the network of departments of the World Trade Organization, pointing out the importance of academic cooperation in the formation of inclusive trade policy.

    At the end of the meeting, a fruitful question and answer session with UWED students took place, which provided an invaluable opportunity for direct dialogue with the leadership of the WTO.
